When trying to think of a technology that will change professional communication in the future, the first program I thought of was "DOMO".
DOMO is not necessarily the newest technology, however, it is extremely underutilized. I worked with a company that used DOMO and I realized in that job, this could change businesses.
In my own words, DOMO is the social media of a business. Not to be confused with Linkedin because this product is entirely for the single business itself. Not only is there messaging and posting for communication, it allows for each and every individual within the company to have access to crucial numbers and data that used to be extremely hard to access if you were not in the proper department. The owners themselves said, "It started with highly respected, highly frustrated executives who felt locked out of their own business data. And when you get that much talent and experience focused on one problem—making data more accessible to business leaders—you get a phenomenal solution."
There are many reasons that I believe this will change professional communication but I am going to focus on two main ones. First, individuals will create a relationship via the internet rather than speaking one on one. When I first started at the company I was with, we had monthly meetings to discuss whatever concerns we had about out store. Once DOMO was implemented, we met online at a specific date and time each month and messaged back and forth about whatever it was we were concerned with. Aside from that, we also began messaging through each week when things came up and we saw that others were online. This changed the personal feel that I had with each individual. Slowly, I knew them as their usernames not their face. Although it become very simple and easy, I stopped feeling like a human being. I felt like one step to get to where we were heading, not a human being trying to develop each day. As more businesses jump on board with this program, more people are going to lose sight of their identity and what they add to a company. Second, we stopped having interactions and updates on numbers. Each night, we would upload our numbers for the day onto DOMO. Others were able to comment and give comments or advice, as well as post their numbers. This was very cool because we were able to see how we were competing with others in the business. It also made keeping track of numbers extremely simple. This will allow for less miscommunication within businesses. They will be able to see numbers and graphs instantly as well as look back on them when needed.
In conclusion, this will change communication regardless of if we want it to or not. Whether it is for the good or bad is for the user to decide. I was able to touch on two small ideas, one negative and one positive. The reason being, I have not quite determined if the overall effect will be for better or worse. However, this will change communication -- ready or not.
